  Reading Questions

March 9

Dante

Bring Purgatorio & Inferno. Keep reading one Canto aloud each day.

Boethius - Book V

We have plenty to discuss! May I suggest you bring your own questions about canto XVII and the various sins being purged on the 4th-7th terraces.  I will certainly have my own questions.

As a class - we will add some Inferno columns to the Organization of Purgatory table located between pp. 190 & 191.

  1. According to Boethius, does Satan possess will? power?

  2. How can divine providence, i.e. foreknowledge,  preserve free will? What is the key to his argument?

  3. Make a list: Without free will, we get __?

  4. What does Boethius mean when he says: "every object of knowledge is known not as a result of its own nature, but of the nature of those who comprehend it" (132)?
