Goals

  1. Prepare for graduate work in economics.
  2. Gain a foundation in economics to students interested in professional careers in business, law, and government.
  3. Obtain the analytical tools helpful in grappling with crucial issues both within and outside the confines of economics.
  4. Gain knowledge of a problem-based social science that deals with some of the most serious issues confronting society, as well as individual problems.
  5. Use critical thinking in evaluating human behavior.
  6. Gain a well rounded foundation of economic concepts and theories, along with examples of their practical applications.
  7. Obtain a broad understanding of theoretical and empirical methodology.

 

Objectives

  1. Learn to use inductive and deductive reasoning and acquire the necessary skills to perform quantitative analysis.
  2. Think critically when analyzing and making decisions during uncertainty.
  3. Be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally in presenting research on economic topics and discuss economic issues.
  4. Have a firm understanding of various topics in the field of economics such as economic growth, energy, pollution, military spending, wages, cost of living, taxes, voting.
  5. Understand and appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of economics, which lies at the heart of an institution that stresses the liberal arts.
  6. Effectively be able to interpret and evaluate the economic content of published records.
  7. Effectively be able to locate and interpret important economic data.
  8. Be able to interpret and evaluate economic news stories.
  9. Design an empirical (econometric) model.
  10. Apply the information gained from his or her major to practical problems and daily events.
  11. Integrate personal faith and learning.
